AUBURN HILLS, MI & RICHARDSON, TX — Amazon’s ambitious expansion of its Prime Air drone delivery service is encountering significant community resistance, with residents in several operational areas in the United States and the United Kingdom reporting issues ranging from incessant noise to privacy concerns and perceived safety risks. While Amazon touts “ultrafast, safe, and convenient” deliveries, the reality on the ground appears more complex for those living under what some describe as “drone highways.”
In Auburn Hills, Michigan, where Amazon’s drone operations stem from a nearby Pontiac facility, city leaders have acknowledged a growing chorus of complaints. Residents have expressed unease over the frequent flights, with drones typically operating between 200 and 250 feet, capable of reaching speeds of nearly 70 miles per hour, and delivering packages up to five pounds, according to city officials. Although the municipality lacks the direct authority to regulate airspace – a domain of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) – Auburn Hills has positioned itself as an advocate for its citizens, engaging with both Amazon and the FAA to relay feedback. The city has even launched a public information page, urging residents to document their experiences.
“The local customer response to Prime Air’s ultrafast delivery of household essentials, electronics, and medications has been overwhelmingly positive,” Amazon stated, adding, “We value the feedback of the communities where we operate and will continue working with Auburn Hills community members and officials to address their questions and concerns.” This sentiment, however, contrasts sharply with the experiences of some residents.
Noise and Privacy Concerns Mount
Further south, in Richardson, Texas, the situation has escalated into public protests. Residents from at least four neighborhoods gathered outside an Amazon Prime Air facility, decrying what they call a “drone highway” above their homes. Angie Rogers, a Richardson resident, reported hearing the drones even inside her home with the television on. Another resident, Kristi Graham, claimed drones pass over her property every three to five minutes, lamenting, “They’ve taken away our peace in our neighborhood and our neighborhood streets.”
A primary grievance among Richardson residents is the perceived low altitude of the flights. Graham stated, “These drones are barely at 100 feet over our homes.” This concern is amplified by a drone crash that occurred in the city in February. An Amazon spokesperson later attributed the incident to “some type of interference” with the drone’s GPS near a large building, leading the company to remove similar structures from its delivery portfolio. The city council had approved Amazon Prime Air operations last year, but many residents contend they were not adequately informed until the drones began flying overhead.
Mixed Reception Across the Atlantic
Amazon’s foray into drone delivery is not confined to the United States. In May 2026, the company commenced its first UK drone deliveries in Darlington, County Durham, making it the first retailer to do so. Packages under five pounds, containing everyday items, are now delivered within a 7.5-mile radius of Amazon’s fulfillment center. The company projects a maximum of ten flights an hour, or up to a hundred deliveries daily on weekdays, in this limited launch.
While some, like local resident Rob Shield, initially embraced the novelty – ordering “everything under the sun” from pens to chocolates – the broader community response has been mixed. “I think I’d rather somebody actually handed me my parcel than dropping it into my garden,” one Darlington resident told the BBC, while another described the idea as “nutty as a fruitcake.” David Carbon, Vice President of Amazon Prime Air, remains confident in the demand for speed, stating, “The certainty is people have never told us they want their stuff slower.” He highlighted that US deliveries currently average 36 minutes, significantly faster than the two-hour window in the UK.

The challenges faced by Amazon underscore a critical aspect of drone integration: the balance between technological advancement and community acceptance. While companies like Amazon push the boundaries of commercial drones, the absence of localized regulations for noise and privacy often leaves municipalities with limited recourse. The FAA’s overarching authority on airspace means local concerns frequently funnel through federal channels.
The experiences in Michigan, Texas, and the UK illustrate that while the concept of drone delivery holds promise, the practical implementation requires careful consideration of its impact on daily life. As these drones become a more common sight, particularly for last-mile logistics, the industry will likely face increasing pressure to address community concerns and collaborate more closely with local governments.
