SEATTLE, WA – Seattle has launched the world’s first drone scoreboard, displaying real-time match scores and national flags during the city’s FIFA World Cup 26™ matches. The innovative display, featuring 400 drones, debuted on June 15 and 19 near the iconic Space Needle, drawing crowds to Seattle Center.
The drone scoreboard is a project by Visit Seattle, the official destination marketing organization for Seattle and King County. It aims to highlight the city’s blend of technological innovation and strong sports fandom to a global audience, according to a press release from Visit Seattle.
An Innovative Fan Experience
The 12-minute nightly shows broadcast each team’s final score alongside their country’s flag. This marks the first instance of a same-day score being implemented as part of a drone show, offering a unique fan experience for the international sporting event. In addition to scores and flags, the drone formations include elements evoking Seattle’s skyline and the SeattleFWC26 “whale tail” design by artist Shogo Ota.
Stephanie Byington, chief marketing officer for Visit Seattle, stated that the idea embodies Seattle’s unique appeal to both visitors and residents. “Within one of the world’s most beautiful destinations, you have a place where a passionate sports fandom and a deep spirit of innovation and technology thrive,” Byington said. She added that the drone scoreboard is intended to leave a lasting impression on fans attending the matches and those watching globally.
Viewing Opportunities and Schedule
The drone shows are free and open to the public, with the International Fountain at Seattle Center identified as the optimal viewing location. Following the initial displays on June 15 (Belgium v. Egypt) and June 19 (USA v. Australia), four more shows are scheduled. These include Wednesday, June 24, at 10 p.m. PT (Bosnia-Herzegovina v. Qatar), and Friday, June 26, after 11 p.m. PT (Egypt v. Iran). Additional shows are planned for Wednesday, July 1, at 11:30 p.m. PT (Match 82), and Monday, July 6 (Match 94), with times subject to change.
This deployment showcases a growing trend in the use of commercial drones for public entertainment and large-scale events. While drone shows have become increasingly popular for their visual spectacle, integrating real-time data like sports scores represents a new application for the technology.
Seattle’s Role in the World Cup
Seattle is hosting six matches for the FIFA World Cup 26™. The drone scoreboard initiative is part of the broader celebration activities centered at Seattle Center, a short distance from the downtown core. The Space Needle, a landmark from the 1962 World’s Fair, serves as a fitting backdrop for this futuristic display.
The use of drones in public spaces for events like the World Cup highlights evolving capabilities and public acceptance. This contrasts with some past major sporting events, such as the 2022 World Cup, where World Cup drone seizures exceeded 300 due to unauthorized flights. The Seattle initiative, being officially sanctioned, demonstrates a planned and integrated use of drone technology for fan engagement. This also falls under the broader Events category for UAS applications, moving beyond traditional surveillance or delivery roles.
The successful implementation of such a large-scale, real-time drone display could pave the way for similar applications in future global events, further solidifying drones as a versatile tool for public spectacle and information delivery.
